I like the mornings when it has rained all night and in the morning everything is fresh and slightly cold. Wasn't so beautiful in India (with all the mess created by the rain overnight and the flooding afterward). But this is one of the perks of living abroad. On such a fresh morning, what could be better than a cup of hot chocolate, oldies (its Shammi's day today :)) and the blog.
When I landed on Nov 13th at Kingsford Smith International Airport, Sydney, I was a lil skeptic about whether I would like the place. US (Fond Du Lac, to be exact) has grown on me so much that I feel I would not feel at home anywhere else (sadly, 'anywhere' includes India too). First couple of days I kept thinking if my decision of moving, to a European cultured country, was right. Weather is unpredictable, streets are deserted, markets close at 7 pm (excluding the food-joints). But soon I realized unpredictable weather is nice. I don't have to worry about the constant heat. And some days are so so beautiful. I am liking the surprises of the mornings. Deserted streets are kind of peaceful, which I always wanted and early market closing means people could spend time at home with family (instead of uselessly roaming in supermarkets, like in US). Now I think, Sydney isn't so bad after all.
Definitely, this is going to take time. Coz it is totally not my type. I am more at ease with liberal and casual culture of US. Sydney (don't want to generalize by saying Oz, just yet) is more on formal, traditional style. People are always finely dressed. (Even when going for a casual Sunday morning breakfast. Makes me uncomfortable :P).
Anyway, I din't know that the richest people in Oz are Chinese and Japanese. I wonder, how come, there are so many Chinese everywhere. I feel Sydney is the most cosmopolitan city I have been too (beating NYC and LA). People from all around the world. The Limo Driver who picked us up from the airport was a Pakistani. Nice guy. He even got us some Indian Dinner. :)
I am yet to visit any famous landmark. One good thing is, my new apartment is just 5 mins walk from the Sydney Harbour Bridge. So I am gonna get lots of pics of the Bridge. Did I ever mention, Bridges are my favorite photographic subject? Well, yes. I wanted to upload some pics with this post too, but I wanted them to be of the Bridge or the Opera House. So that would have to wait, I guess.
I would be back (soon) with more about the city.
Until then, chao!
P.S. Is this one of my most 'unorganized' post?
My favorite Shammi song - "Tarif karun kya uski". Beautiful lyrics. :)
